Jivamukti Cafe at the Jivamukti Yoga School
841 Broadway, 2nd floor
December 2009, deadline extended January 15 2010

Inspired by the teachings of David Life and Sharon Gannon, we come together as a community to enrich the creative culture by yoking it with the force of spiritual activism to make a difference in the lives of others.

Artists explore this concept by creating nests similar to the way birds gather objects to build a home. The nests will be on silent auction until January 14, 2010 to raise funds to build actual homes for those animals and humans displaced.

All proceeds will go to HABITAT FOR HUMANITY in Sri Lanka, to aid families without homes still from the Tsunami in 2004, and those living in relief camps in the wake of the Sri Lankan civil war and the NY Audubon, a grassroots community interested in the preservation of wild birds and their habitats in the five boroughs of Manhattan.

Joan WaltemathHarmonic ratios are a mathematical language used to describe growth patterns and forms in nature.  The Golden Mean is perhaps the most well known of the three roots (ratios) - root of 2, root of 3 and root of 5.  Many different cultures have used the ratio’s, which have been known since ancient times.  Also called Divine Proportion they can be found as a guide to structure and form in art and architecture.   We instantly recognize the vibrations emanating from these numbers as being essentially related, because of their unique ability to resonate with the human form and generate a sense of well-being.   Sometimes they are called irrational, because like pi they cannot be resolved into an integer in base 10.  Precision comes from working with them geometrically.  I began to work with Harmonic ratios like the golden mean when I discovered how to construct the cross or four directions form using the root of 2 progression.  The four crosses create a void space between them.  Since this is where it all begins by radiating in four directions, I have chosen to use this construction for my nest.   Like a nest it is the place we start and from which we move out into the world.
