the nesting project
a group installation

Jivamukti Cafe at the Jivamukti Yoga School
841 Broadway, 2nd floor
December 2009, deadline extended January 15 2010

Inspired by the teachings of David Life and Sharon Gannon, we come together as a community to enrich the creative culture by yoking it with the force of spiritual activism to make a difference in the lives of others.

Artists explore this concept by creating nests similar to the way birds gather objects to build a home. The nests will be on silent auction until January 14, 2010 to raise funds to build actual homes for those animals and humans displaced.

All proceeds will go to HABITAT FOR HUMANITY in Sri Lanka, to aid families without homes still from the Tsunami in 2004, and those living in relief camps in the wake of the Sri Lankan civil war and the NY Audubon, a grassroots community interested in the preservation of wild birds and their habitats in the five boroughs of Manhattan.

Scott Massarsky is an artist, musician and writer who’s work deals with a large range of issues and topics including, nature, healing, social awareness and above all the creative process.www.myspace.com/scottmassarskyandthemakeshiftorchestra(Cher ami is a song about courage, healing and inspired by a very famous pigeon)
Being a visual artist and a somewhat obsessive collector of things for my art, nesting comes naturally. I think I am also by nature the most likely of all my friends to be a stay at home mom, LOL! I have been learning about the local healing plants in my area for about 6 years now and most of my work deals with the themes of nurturing, healing and soothing…. Nesting to me is about creating a safe and sacred place, and it seems to me that it is in these places that the greatest and most creative ideas are born…. But of all the art forms that I have built “nests” in, the one that I keep on coming back to is song writing and music. I am most of all a collector of ideas which I glean from books, libraries, documentary movies, stories, folklore and other mediums of art in which I turn into songs… I have many songs written on the theme of nurturing and have even more that were inspired by birds.
Bird House
This piece was started a couple of years ago when I got the idea of making an installation out of bird houses and wooden boxes, inscribed and hung together for the birds to explore. I used a burning tool to make marks and designs, writing words as they came into my mind. I found it recently and thought it would be perfect for the exhibit. I finished it by writing the lyrics of a song I wrote inspired by birds on the roof, and the rest on wooden pieces, which I put inside the house. Writing and music as always informed my art and this was a way to bring my art and songwriting together. A nest for me is a safe and sacred place and art and music is that place for me. My words hang on this house which hangs from the sky and the space inside is a place of protection and growth.
